Polar Bears in the UK? Sounds strange but we're going to try and breed them in Scotland later this year. The last time we attempted to breed Polar Bear cubs was 25 years ago.
The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland have begun preparing for the arrival of two bears at Highland Wildlife Park near Aviemore. In the wild, make and female polar bears live separately. In order to mimic this in the park, a crate was placed in the male bears' enclosure which will be used to transport Arktos to where the female. They hope that this tactic will mean they can pair the two up without the use of a sedative.
Grizzly Bears are part of one of nature's greatest events, every year they gather, all to get the best catch. Check out this video of the event - it's quite incredible!
This amazing bear is the smallest member of the bear family and lives in the dense forests of Southeast Asia. They take their name from the bib-shaped golden patch on their chest which legend says, represents the rising sun. They're also nicknamed the dog bear as they have the same kind of build a short muzzle nose. To stop them overheating, they have a sleek, black coat which is also thick and coarse to provide protection from things like twigs and branches - but also to keep dry! Ironically Sun bears are nocturnal, lumbering through the forests by night, snacking on berries and so on- everything even up to small rodents. They also have a huge tongue which is perfect for extracting honey from bees nests - giving them their other nickname, the 'honey bear'. We don't actually know a lot about honey bears, we don't even have enough data to know how many there are in the wild. Having said that, because of the high deforestation and poaching levels scientists aren't hopeful - they might actually be in danger of extinction.
Polar Bears are amazing bears, they can look very cute, yet they can be very vicious! These are bears with bite! These carnivorous bears roam the ice sheets within the Arctic Circle, they might look cute but can be anything but cute!
As far as food is concerned, the Polar Bear's favorite food is the ringed seal. They lie in wait for them as the seals appear at the surface of the water to breathe at openings in the ice. Having said that, they'll have more or less anything that's nutritious and doesn't take too much energy to catch. The bears also have an astounding sense of smell - hence the reason why the cameraman below got a little caught up!
They also use their perfect adaptions to make the most out of life on the ice. They use their large front paws which are slightly webbed to swim around the ice. Their thick coat of insulated fur means that the bear can live an extremely comfortable life in one of the planet's coldest environments. Unlike many other bears they also have fur which grows on the underside of their paws to increase their grip on the ice.
